My Favorite Colorado Wine In Colorado Wine Country

A big hello to you all. This is a story about my favorite Colorado wine in Colorado Wine Country.

Let me begin by telling you my wine discovery story. A pleasant surprise was waiting for me the time when my wife, Jodie and I were visiting our local mega liqueur store Total Wine and more. As we were perusing the wine aisles I saw a dedicated area showcasing Colorado wines. And low and behold my favorite Colorado wine was one of the selections. They had a nice selection from Colterris Winery . Now I know what you are thinking, quality Colorado wine, is there even such a thing? Seems impossible doesn’t it? A quality Colorado wine probably sounds oxymoronic, especially to my friends from California, Washington and Oregon. But let me tell you, that surprisingly the quality of Colorado wines have improved over the last ten years .

Do I or Do I Not Like Colorado Wine

I was like any other self respecting wine lover and for awhile I looked down on Colorado wines. Yet as an oenophile I always had the desire to visit Colorado wine country in Palisades.

Going to the Palisades area is where I discovered Colterris wines. No this is not a sponsored post… I wish… maybe down the road. Anyway, my wife and I and two other couples decided to take a long weekend and visit Colorado wine country. It was really a great trip. We stayed at the Wine Country Inn in the heart of Palisades wine country. And decided to map out 10 wineries to visit. Yes, there are a lot of type A personalities in this group.. LOL.

My Colorado Wine Country Journey

Staying At The Wine Country Inn

To continue one of the wonderful aspects of staying at the Wine Country Inn is that it has its own vineyard all around the Inn. I enjoyed the fact that it has all the different grape varietals marked in each area of the groves. We took advantage of the Inn’s nightly wine tasting to start our wine tasting adventure. Disappointingly, the wine wasn’t great. Boy, you would think I am a wine snob. LOL.

Wine Country in Palisade Journey Begins

The next day we began our tasting trip by headed to Garfield Estates. Most of the wines we had were young and thin tasting. They did have some chocolate wine if you like that sort of thing. Graystone Winery which specializes in port had some pretty good selections. We actually purchased a bottle. So, check out the picture above because Graystone’s tasting room was much different than the others. It reminded me of a castle on the inside.

After our visit to Graystone we made are way to Grand River Vineyards . Going to Grand River last was good planning on our part because it was located back near our hotel. Again the wine was okay it being similar to the other wines as tasting thin and young. However, we did get the chance to take a fascinating tour of their wine making process.

Wine Country in Palisade Journey Continues

Most of the wines we tasted had the young underdeveloped aspect to them . St Kathryn Cellars had some interesting fruit flavored wines which were actually not bad. The uniqueness of the process of added fruit to the wine made for some interesting sweet wines. Because of this distinctiveness, we had to purchase some of their product. Similarly, we had to buy a bottle from their sister winery, Talon Wines. Talon had some pretty good whites and again it was a cool eclectic place to visit. The Red Fox Cellars was fun to visit with pretty good wine.

Wine Made Form Honey

Next we set off to one of the most unusual wineries. we headed to another winery related to St Kathryn Cellars called the Meadery of the Rockies. Mead is a wine made from honey. This was an interesting place with their many different honey based products made available for purchase.

Each of these places had their own fun, unique decor and theme. Colterris Winery was a little ways out from our hotel but worth the drive. We had a tour of their facility and vineyard and of course then to the tasting room.

Enjoying Colterris’ tasting room is where I found their White Cabernet Sauvignon. It is crisp yet it keeps the dryness at a perfect balance. Yummy. Of course we purchased a few bottles and were sorry we did not buy more, especially after we consumed our last bottle. Then of course out of sight out of mind until the wonderful discover at the wine store.

In summary, I totally recommend a trip to Palisades. And I totally forgot to mention the peaches. The best peaches in the country…sorry Georgia. You can also schedule visits to the fruit orchards just like visiting the vineyards. It really is a great trip and such a quaint farming area .

The Food is So so

I do have to say that the food we had was just basic stuff such as bar food and such. So I recommend not planing a foodie trip. Although if anyone knows of interesting restaurants in the Palisades area I would love to try it as I am all about the food.

Well that is all for now. Thank you so much for stopping by and reading my blog…. I hope you enjoyed my Colorado Wine Country journey. And please check out my post about grilling pizza here.

Ciao!

And buon appetito.

    1. You didn’t have a hangover…that was on the Alaska trip LOL
I guess it’s all that mental exercise I do. 🙂

  1. I’ve been to a few of the wineries in that area and particularly enjoyed the Meadery…so different from the California wines where I live. I have to agree with you about the food options in that area…not so great, eh? I’ve heard how exceptional the Palisade peaches are for many years, but haven’t tried them myself. Perhaps you’ll visit the Peach Festival this summer and tell your readers all about it 🙂

    1. Yes I have to say mead wine is an acquired taste…. we are traveling more than usual this year so I’m not sure we can fit in a trip to the Peach Festival but you never know… we will certainly order peaches however.

  2. I enjoyed your recap of your tasting tour. I have sampled Ohio wines (where I live) with similar results. Young wines and just not good, generally speaking. Nothing I would purchase, so you guys were fortunate to find a vineyard you would go back to. I love to go to a local winery to sit outside (weather permitting) to chat with friends, but you have to go easy on the wine and drink lots of water, or the next day will be difficult!! I think when trying local wines the thing to focus on is the experience. You had a fun weekend with friends, and that kind of thing can make up for mediocre wines. And then, with a little luck, you just might stumble on a winner!

    1. Hi, I know we especially like to go to one of our local vineyards Balistreri vineyards during their harvest festival. Again the wine isn’t great but they have lots of delicious food and it’s fun to spend the day with friends.
      Thanks,
      Rob
